Energy bites, protein balls, bliss balls – whatever you want you like to call them, they are a staple in my weekly meal prep. These refined sugar-free, lunchbox-friendly bites are filled with tummy-filling wholefood ingredients that hit the spot when you want something sweet.
What are Energy Bites
Energy bites are basically a whole bunch of energy-giving ingredients that are blended together (usually in a food processor), then rolled into balls. If you are lucky, they will also be covered in something perhaps not so healthy, like a big chunky layer of chocolate.
Most recipes I have made have the same base ingredients:
- Dates – this is what adds sweetness to the mixture, and is what holds everything together. Dates also provide fibre and antioxidants
- Oats – these are to energy bites, what flour is to pancakes – essential! Oats provide a source of fibre and protein – good for energy, and the gut.
- Seeds –
Energy bites might be something that have had their time in the sun, but they still serve a purpose, are so easy to make, and store in the fridge incredibly well.
Why you should make Energy Bites
The thing is, I love a little something sweet. Actually, I can’t eat a meal without wanting something sweet after. The problem is, inhaling endless amounts of cookies or chocolate doesn’t make me feel good. In the moment itself, I’ll be riding the sugar train happy as a clam, but after, I do wonder how smart the decision was. So how can one get a ‘hit’ without the guilt?
